About Bacitracin

What is this medication?

Bacitracin is an antibiotic used primarily to prevent or treat minor skin infections caused by small cuts, scrapes, or burns. It works by interfering with the cell wall synthesis of certain types of bacteria, effectively stopping their growth and preventing the spread of infection. While it is most commonly recognized as a topical ointment, the medication is also available in an injectable form for more serious conditions under strict medical supervision.

The injectable version of this medication is specifically indicated for infants with pneumonia and empyema caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci. It is essential to use this drug only for bacterial infections, as it is ineffective against viral or fungal conditions. Patients should follow their healthcare provider's instructions carefully and complete the full prescribed course of treatment to prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
