About BRIMONIDINE

What is this medication?

Brimonidine is a prescription medication primarily used in the form of eye drops to lower internal pressure within the eye. It is most often prescribed to patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The medication belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic agonists and works by decreasing the amount of fluid produced in the eye while simultaneously increasing the amount of fluid that drains out.

This medication is also available as a topical gel used to treat certain skin conditions. When applied to the skin, it helps reduce persistent facial redness specifically associated with rosacea in adults. It achieves this by narrowing the blood vessels in the skin, which decreases the appearance of flushing. Whether used for the eyes or the face, it is important to use the specific formulation prescribed for that condition as directed by a healthcare professional.
