About CEVIMELINE
What is this medication? Cevimeline is a prescription medication primarily used to treat symptoms of dry mouth, which is medically referred to as xerostomia. It is specifically indicated for patients with Sjogren's syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by the immune system attacking the glands that produce moisture, such as those responsible for saliva and tears. By increasing the amount of saliva in the mouth, this medication helps patients manage the daily discomfort associated with this condition.
The medication belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinergic agonists. It functions by stimulating specific nerve receptors that signal the salivary glands to produce more fluid. This increase in moisture makes it easier for individuals to chew, swallow, and speak, while also helping to prevent dental issues that can arise when the mouth is consistently dry. It is typically taken in capsule form as directed by a healthcare provider to maintain consistent relief.
