About esomeprazole
What is this medication?
Esomeprazole is a prescription medication classified as a proton pump inhibitor, which works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus and causes heartburn. By lowering acid levels, the medication helps alleviate painful symptoms and allows the lining of the esophagus to heal from acid damage.
In addition to treating acid reflux, esomeprazole is used to decrease the risk of stomach ulcers in patients who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs regularly. It is also prescribed to treat conditions involving excessive stomach acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and to help eradicate H. pylori infections when used in combination with antibiotics. This medication is available in various forms, including delayed-release capsules and oral suspensions, to help manage chronic digestive issues and prevent future complications related to excess gastric acid.
