About NEXIUM

What is this medication?

Nexium is a prescription medication with the generic name esomeprazole that belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It works by significantly reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach lining. This medication is most commonly used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, in both adults and children. By decreasing stomach acid, it helps alleviate chronic heartburn and prevents the backflow of acid into the food pipe.

Beyond treating reflux symptoms, Nexium is used to promote the healing of erosive esophagitis, a condition where stomach acid has damaged the lining of the esophagus. It is also prescribed to lower the risk of developing stomach ulcers in people who frequently use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Additionally, it may be used for the long-term management of rare conditions that cause excessive acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The medication is typically available as a delayed-release capsule or an oral liquid.
