About FOLIC ACID
What is this medication?
Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, which is a naturally occurring B vitamin essential for various bodily functions. As a prescription medication, it is primarily used to treat or prevent folate deficiency and certain types of anemia, such as megaloblastic anemia, where the body produces abnormally large red blood cells that do not function properly. It is also frequently prescribed to people who have medical conditions that prevent the proper absorption of nutrients from food.
In addition to treating deficiencies, folic acid is vital for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant to help prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. It also plays a role in supporting the production of DNA and the growth of new cells. Sometimes, doctors prescribe folic acid to help reduce the side effects of other medications, such as those used for rheumatoid arthritis, by maintaining healthy folate levels in the body.
