About LIDODERM
What is this medication? Lidoderm is a prescription medicated patch containing lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic. This medication is primarily used to relieve the chronic nerve pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia, a condition that can develop following a shingles infection. When applied to the skin, the patch releases lidocaine to dampen the excitability of nerve endings, effectively blocking pain signals from reaching the brain.
The patch is designed for topical application and should only be placed on intact skin where the pain is localized. It is generally recommended to be worn for up to twelve hours in any twenty-four hour period, followed by a twelve-hour patch-free interval to prevent the medication from building up too much in the body. Because it works locally, Lidoderm provides targeted relief while reducing the risk of the systemic side effects frequently caused by oral pain relievers.
