About Salicylic Acid 6% Gel

What is this medication? Salicylic acid 6% gel is a topical prescription medication used to treat various skin conditions characterized by thickened, hard, or scaly skin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as keratolytics, which work by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that causes skin cells to stick together. This process helps the outer layer of skin to shed more easily, making it effective for managing conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and ichthyosis. In addition to treating chronic skin conditions, this high-strength formulation is often used to remove stubborn warts, calluses, and corns. By softening the keratin in the skin, the medication allows for the gradual removal of excess tissue and helps underlying healthy skin surface. Patients are typically advised to apply the gel only to the affected areas as directed by a healthcare professional, avoiding contact with healthy skin, eyes, or mucous membranes to prevent irritation.
