About Sodium Sulfacetamide
What is this medication? Sodium sulfacetamide is a prescription antibiotic medication that belongs to the group of drugs known as sulfonamides. It is primarily used to treat various types of bacterial infections by stopping the growth of certain bacteria. This medication is available in different forms depending on the area being treated, including eye drops or ointments for the eyes and lotions, cleansers, or creams for the skin.
When applied to the eyes, it is commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial eye infections. In its topical form for the skin, it is frequently used to manage conditions like acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea. It works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce folic acid, which is essential for their survival and multiplication.
