About Sulfacetamide Sodium

What is this medication?

Sulfacetamide sodium is a prescription sulfonamide antibiotic primarily used to treat various bacterial infections of the eyes and skin. In its ophthalmic form, it is commonly prescribed to manage conditions like bacterial conjunctivitis, which is frequently referred to as pink eye, as well as other superficial ocular infections. When formulated as a topical lotion or wash, it is often utilized to treat dermatological issues such as acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea.

The medication works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria rather than killing them directly. It interferes with the ability of bacteria to synthesize folic acid, a nutrient essential for their growth and multiplication. By stopping the spread of the infection, it allows the body's natural immune system to clear the remaining bacteria. It is important to note that this medication is specifically effective against bacterial infections and will not work for infections caused by viruses or fungi.
