About Tretinoin
What is this medication?
Tretinoin is a prescription-strength topical medication that belongs to a class of drugs called retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A. It is most commonly used to treat acne vulgaris by promoting rapid skin cell turnover and preventing the formation of new pimples and blackheads. By keeping the pores clear, it helps to reduce the frequency and severity of breakouts while also helping to heal existing lesions more quickly.
In addition to its use for acne, tretinoin is frequently prescribed to improve the appearance of skin damaged by sun exposure or natural aging. It is effective at reducing the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots by stimulating collagen production and evening out skin tone. Because this medication makes the skin significantly more sensitive to ultraviolet light, patients are typically advised to apply it at night and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day.
