About Lymphastat

What is this medication?

Lymphastat, which is more commonly known by its generic name belimumab, is a prescription medication used to treat patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus. This condition is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues throughout the body, leading to inflammation and organ damage. The medication is also specifically indicated for individuals suffering from active lupus nephritis, a complication of the disease that affects the kidneys. It is usually prescribed for patients who are already receiving standard therapy but still require additional management to control their symptoms and reduce the frequency of disease flares.

The drug functions as a human monoclonal antibody that targets a specific protein called B-lymphocyte stimulator. By binding to this protein, the medication prevents the survival of certain B cells, which are white blood cells that produce autoantibodies in people with lupus. By decreasing the activity and lifespan of these overactive B cells, the treatment helps to reduce the underlying autoimmune response and the resulting inflammation. It is administered either through an intravenous infusion in a clinical setting or as a subcutaneous injection that can sometimes be performed at home. Because it suppresses parts of the immune system, healthcare providers must monitor patients for potential side effects or increased risks of infection.
