About Matervia

What is this medication? Lyrica is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient pregabalin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants or antiepileptics. This medication is primarily used to manage chronic pain conditions, specifically neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy or postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain following an outbreak of shingles. It is also commonly prescribed to treat fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and sleep issues. In addition to managing pain, Lyrica is used as an adjunctive therapy for adults with partial-onset seizures. It works by decreasing the number of pain signals sent out by damaged nerves in the body and by calming overactive nerve cells that cause seizures. Because it affects the central nervous system, it should only be taken under strict medical supervision to ensure proper dosing and to monitor for potential side effects such as dizziness, sleepiness, or blurred vision.
