About Urea Cream 40%
What is this medication? Urea cream 40% is a high-potency keratolytic medication designed to treat various skin conditions involving dry, rough, or thickened tissue. It functions by increasing the skin's moisture content and dissolving the protein matrix that holds dead skin cells together. This action helps to soften and shed excess skin, making it an effective treatment for hyperkeratotic conditions like psoriasis, eczema, calluses, and corns. By promoting the removal of dead tissue, it allows for better hydration and helps restore the skin's normal texture.
This medication is also commonly used to treat damaged, thickened, or ingrown nails caused by fungal infections or injury. The high concentration of urea softens the nail plate, facilitating the non-surgical removal of diseased nail tissue. It is usually applied directly to the affected skin or nail and may be covered with an occlusive dressing to enhance its effectiveness. Because it is a strong formulation, it should be used exactly as directed by a healthcare professional to avoid irritating healthy surrounding skin.
